Sotogrande is a gleaming jewel on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain. For those of us who live in Gibraltar, it is literally “just up the road”. Also, Malaga is only 115 km distance.
I’m really lucky to have some good friends about to move to Sotogrande and their recent request when they called me from the UK to give me the news that they were heading to join me in the Mediterranean was: “you’ve got to tell us all the things to do in Sotogrande, Spain – yes, Spain!”
They were pretty excited, and for me, it was an absolute pleasure to list and guide out all the best things to do in Sotogrande (San Roque), not to mention all the fun activities and attractions there are to do in Sotogrande.
So, because it is just a short drive from my home in Gibraltar, I took to the road and spent a very enjoyable afternoon drawing up my list of what to do in Sotogrande, San Roque, Spain.
Fun things to do in Sotogrande:
Set by the sea in the very beautiful countryside of Andalucía in southern Spain, Sotogrande is a gorgeous setting for any home.
With wonderful weather most of the year, which means hours and hours of sunshine and warm temperatures even in winter, it is also the perfect place to enjoy outdoor activities, like Polo or tours. I checked out the ones that I know my friends and their family are keen on, but I’m sure there’s much more for them to do once they settle in Sotogrande.
Here are some good ideas to spend your time in holidays. Also you could find wonderful hotels or short rentals when you and your family travel to Sotogrande.
▶️ Beaches 🏖️
Well this has to be top of anyone’s list when they travel to Sotogrande. It’s not just about the beautiful stretches of sand on the edge of the sparkling blue sea, which is so tempting all the time. The beautiful natural beaches of Sotogrande are a magnet for the friendly community here and even in winter you will meet new friends walking or exercising on the sand and taking in the glorious sea air.
The beach is also a great place to socialise (I know my friends will love that!) and Sotogrande has two great beach clubs: El Octogano and El Cucuracho. Trendy summer venues, these clubs have a fun atmosphere, seaside pools and superb waiter-service restaurants. And yes, I guess going to the beach is one of my favourite fun things to do in Sotogrande.
▶️ Polo 🏇
Horse riding is a popular activity in Sotogrande, and not just for the Brits who are well- known horse-lovers, and Sotogrande sun worshippers! There are riding schools for youngsters, showjumping schools, organised horseback hacks into the countryside and a dressage school nearby. But the jewel in the crows of Sotogrande’s equestrian life is the Santa Maria Polo Club in Sotogrande. The Polo Club is renowned worldwide as a prestigious venue and hosting some top international competitions. My friends and my family have been riding for years and they are going to love living in Sotogrande with access to an exclusive polo club!
▶️ Golf 🏌️♀️
Another favourite pastime of mine and most of my friends although I have only taken it up since spending a lot of time having fun in Sotogrande and I am still very much a beginner. For keen golfers, Sotogrande is just an ideal place to live.
The best golf courses are found around Sotogrande, so whether you’re a beginner, a skilled player, or an enthusiast who enjoys the sport, it’s all there for you in Sotogrande. They have super good reviews. And it is an absolute joy for keen golfers that there are opportunities to have your home right by a golf club: an aficionado’s dream can come true in Sotogrande.
▶️ Visit Torreguadiaro 😍
Torreguadiaro is a charming village situated just to the east of Sotogrande. The little white houses are so typical of Andalusian villages give way to a long stretch of beach, and seafront known for its bars and restaurants and ‘el tapeo’. It’s overlooked by a medieval stone watchtower, part of a string of watchtowers built along the coast after the Moorish invasion. The beach and nearby bars had a really relaxed feel about it, so I’m convinced if my friends need the occasional break from the glamour of the Port of Sotogrande, then Torreguadiaro is close by.
▶️ Sailing ⛵
Of course, you can’t live in such a well-known Port as is Sotogrande and not be able to take up the chance to get on the water! Sotogrande offers loads of opportunities for sailing, whether you’re already a skilled sailor or whether you’re a beginner and want to learn. I’ve learned recently that sailing is a great way to get fit, get a suntan and make wonderful new friends. The lovely Sotogrande marina is the right place to find a sailing or yachting club.
Activities to do near Sotogrande, San Roque:
Sotogrande is surrounded by beautiful countryside, historic towns, marinas and ports, and buzzing cities so there are so many things to do near Sotogrande – my list for my friends kept growing!
In fact, there is so much on offer, that to give my friends a starting point for when they make the move to Spain, I had to whittle my long list down to the very best things to do near Sotogrande. Besides all the things I’ve already mentioned, Sotogrande is a very sociable place to live, and being within easy reach of lots of other towns and communities, you can extend your range of choice.
If you’re English and concerned about the language – don’t be. There are lots of British expats living in and around Sotogrande and the community is very friendly. Besides the sports clubs and outdoor activities there are a range of other community groups including a book club and a writers’ group.
So if you’re wondering what to do near Sotogrande, here’s my other shortlist:
What to do around Sotogrande, Spain?
▶️ Visit Tarifa 🏖️
A day or weekend trip to Tarifa should simply not be missed. The city lies on the southernmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula facing the mountains of Morocco across the Strait of Gibraltar. Its history goes back to ancient times, my these days it is best known for its bohemian culture and its windsports and surfing on somee magnificent stretches of golden sands. Tarifa’s town centre is alive with bards and restaurants, art galleries, museums and historic monuments – there’s something for everyone in Tarifa.
▶️ Visit Ronda 🏛️
Another absolute must if you live in Sotogrande! Ronda is one of the most picturesque towns of southern Spain. It is one of the best places to tour. Ronda is a mountain-top city and it’s set dramatically across a deep gorge called El Tajo. There’s lots of bars, café’s, shops, theatres, gardens and parks and the town has a legendary bull ring which these days is used as a museum. It is just gorgeous for strolling in – I went in May and it was fresh and pretty as anything!
▶️ Visit Marbella 💎
The great thing about Sotogrande is that there are so many great places to visit within such easy reach. The vibrant, glamorous city of Marbella is only a short drive along the coast road, and here you can have your fill of some of the best designer shopping that the Costa del Sol offers – I am really looking forward to some serious girlie shopping trips when my friend moves over to Sotogrande from UK! With top class dining and some fabulous night clubs, it’s easy to understand why Marbella is such a magnet for visitors.
▶️ Dolphin Watching 🐬
Sotogrande is also an ideal starting point for getting close to nature, and in particular, marine life. Only a short drive to Gibraltar, it’s easy to join the many daily whale and dolphin watching boat trips such as a dolphin safari. Escorted by marine experts, you can sail out into the Bay and the Strait which is a busy migration route for these magnificent creatures.
▶️ Selwo Marina 🐊
Staying on the theme of dolphins, Sotogrande is not too far from Benalmadena, where you can find the Selwo Marina, and it is a treasure of a find! Selwo Marina is Andalucía’s only dolphinarium and it is set in the beautiful surroundings of the Arroyo de la Miel.
Besides the dolphins, the park has play areas of children, an Ice Island for penguins, an area called Amazonia where you can explore the natural habitats and creatures of the tropical jungle and another area called the Hondonada, which houses exotic birds from all over South America. A trip from Sotogrande to Selwo Marina makes for a most memorable day.
▶️ Visit Gibraltar 🐒
This is what I very much hope that my friends will be doing, just like I’m looking forward to spending time with them because there’s so many activities to do in Sotogrande. And there is simply so much to do in Gibraltar too! The sight seeing tours of this iconic rock is spectacular and the views from the very top are breathtaking. Then there’s the amazing world-famous apes, the historic Moorish Castle, the stunning Saint Michael’s Cave, the bustling Main Street and its duty-free shopping…and that’s just to mention a few things. Throughout the year there are also some great events and festivals and all within easy reach of Sotogrande.
My friends are going to love living in Spain, in Sotogrande!
